Marie Louise Corridon (born February 5, 1930 in Washington, DC ; died May 26, 2010 in Norwalk , Connecticut ), married Marie Corridon Mortell , was an American swimmer.

life and career

Corridon was born in Washington, DC in 1930, where her father worked as a surgeon . Soon after, the family moved to Norwalk, Connecticut , where the father opened his own practice. Corridon learned to swim at The Longshore Club in Westport, Connecticut , when he was five . She attended St. Joseph's Parish School in Norwalk and later the Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford and Marymount Manhattan College in New York City .

In 1948 she was the winner of the American Short Course Championships over 100 yards freestyle and set a new national record. Two years later she managed to win the title again over the same distance.

In 1948 she appeared in Detroit in the US eliminations for the Olympic Summer Games over 100 meters freestyle and finished second behind Ann Curtis . So she qualified for the games in London . There she was able to reach the semi-finals in this discipline, in which her time of 1: 08.9 minutes was not enough for the final.

She was able to celebrate a greater success as part of the US 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay. Together with Thelma Kalama , Brenda Helser and Ann Curtis, she won the gold medal in a new Olympic record time of 4: 29.2 minutes.

After her career, Corridon worked for the National Olympic Committee as an assistant to President Avery Brundage . She was also employed at the Walter Reed Military Hospital and later at the Norwalk Hospital in administration and public relations.

Corridon was married to William Mortell and had seven children, some of whom were also active swimmers.
