Marie von Brandenburg-Kulmbach, Electress of the Palatinate

Marie von Brandenburg-Kulmbach (born October 14, 1519 in Ansbach , † October 31, 1567 in Heidelberg ) was a princess of Brandenburg-Kulmbach and was electorate of the Palatinate by marriage .

Life

Marie was the eldest child of Margrave Kasimir von Brandenburg-Kulmbach (1481–1527) from his marriage to Susanne (1502–1543), daughter of Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria . After the death of her father, Marie was brought up by her uncle Georg in the Lutheran denomination .

She married the future Elector Friedrich III in Kreuznach on October 21, 1537 . from the Palatinate (1515–1576). The marriage turned out to be happy and Marie, who was described as wise and pious, acted in the Protestant sense on her husband, who was Catholic . In 1546 Friedrich finally professed Lutheran doctrine and took over the administration of the Franconian countries for his brother-in-law Albrecht Alcibiades . Since the family lived in poor conditions, Marie repeatedly turned to her uncle Albrecht von Prussia for financial support.

After the death of Marie's stepfather Ottheinrich in 1559, her husband Friedrich became Elector of the Palatinate. As Electress she was close to government affairs, even if Friedrich did not tolerate interference. She had influence on religious questions, as a strict Lutheran she was a staunch opponent of the Zwinglians .

The elector, who suffered from gout, spent most of the last years of her life confined to bed. She was buried in the Heiliggeistkirche in Heidelberg.
