Marie Friederike Wilhelmine Christina von Hessen-Kassel (born September 6, 1804 in Hanau , † January 1, 1888 in Meiningen ) was a princess of Hessen-Kassel and by marriage Duchess of Saxony-Meiningen . She was the mother of Duke Georg II , a patron of music, theater and reformer of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen.

Life

Marie Friederike was one of six children of Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse and his wife Auguste of Prussia . Her brother Friedrich Wilhelm I was the last Elector of Hesse.

In 1822 Marie was proposed by the Swedish Countess Charlotta Aurora De Geer for the marriage to Oskar I , the later King of Sweden , but this did not materialize.

On March 23, 1825, Marie married Duke Bernhard II of Saxony-Meiningen . He was a son of George I of Saxony-Meiningen and Louise Eleonore zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and a brother of Queen Adelaide of Great Britain and Ireland. Bernhard and Marie had two children. Her son Georg remained an only child for 17 years until his sister Augusta was born in 1843.

After Bernhard II had to abdicate in 1866, she lived with him from then on in the Great Palace in Meiningen. Widowed in 1882, Marie died six years later on January 1st, 1888. Marienstraße in Meiningen city center is named after Marie von Hessen-Kassel .
