The Lady Chapel in Rüngsdorf , a district of Bonn city district Bad Godesberg , belongs to the Catholic Church of St. Andrew and Evergislus - Rheinviertel in the dean's office Bonn-Bad Godesberg of the archbishopric of Cologne . The building has been a listed building (A 1031) since 1986.

location

The chapel is located in an upscale residential area about 250 meters from the Rhine and the Rheinhotel Dreesen . The address is An der Marienkapelle 2 . Here was an intersection of the paths that used to lead to Mehlem and Muffendorf . Today Rolandstrasse and Kapellenweg / An der Marienkapelle intersect at this point , with the island-like chapel in the middle of the intersection being circumvented on both sides by the Rolandstrasse which divides for it.

history

The chapel was built around 1800, the founder of the church is unknown. It is dedicated to the veneration of Mary as the mother of Jesus. It was and is popularly known as "Et Kapellsche" . For a long time it was a pilgrimage destination for the surrounding villages. Even today, the chapel, which is open during the day, is regularly visited by believers, and votive tablets are still dedicated to the Maria worshiped here . In 1972, as part of a restoration of the furnishings, it was found that the Rüngsdorf Madonna , which had previously been displayed here and wrapped in wide robes, is a valuable medieval wooden figure. Today it is protected in the parish church of St. Andreas in Bonn . This Madonna (Mary with child) is about 50 cm tall and subtly worked. It is believed that because of its small size , it could originally have been used for private devotion . The composition of the figure is based closely on the Xanten Madonna in Xanten Cathedral, created by Dries Holthuys in 1496 . In the Lady Chapel it was replaced by another Madonna figure.

In 1986/87 the structure of the building was renovated and the chapel was placed under monument protection. At the end of the 20th century, on the initiative of the citizens of Rüngsdorf, under the leadership of the chairman of the local committee, Josef Weiß, the outdoor area was redesigned with a small forecourt so that the chapel became the center of the intersection. In 2012, the interior of the chapel was renovated on a voluntary basis by a local craft company.

architecture

The walk-in chapel has a rectangular main room with a small apse . The building is plastered and provided with a slate-covered roof and a slate-covered roof turret over the front facade and a bell hung in it. The roof overhangs the entrance , supported by two inclined wooden beams, over the line of the wall , creating the look of a hipped roof on the front .

The chapel has two arched windows with lead-framed glass painting . The artist is unknown. Both windows were made around 1930 and are made of antique and cathedral glass as well as lead, black solder and silver yellow:

  • Depiction of Mary with the child in the rose garden (mother with child standing in a rose bud), an allusion to the Garden of Eden
  • Depiction of the protective cloak Madonna , who hides believers (here parents with children) under her blue cloak. The depiction refers to the hymn of Mary Mary, spread out the cloak , which asks for the protection of the Mother of God . This motif contains a text:

"O Mother of Mercy,
high above us the cloak, wide '
us all' underneath,
safe from all danger to soul and body."

A crucifix is attached above the modern glass entrance door . An information board was installed to the right of the entrance in the 2010s. The chapel is surrounded by an oval plot of land enclosed with a low metal fence and flower borders.

Furnishing

In the interior there are two small benches with knee benches , two three-row metal stands for the installation of sacrificial candles (request for Mary's intercession to God) under smoke hoods and the Madonna figure in a metal box attached to the wall with a front made of safety glass over a small altar table. A crucifix hangs between numerous votive tablets on one side of the chapel room. An offering box is built into one wall . It had to be replaced in 2012 as attempts to steal banknotes with adhesive loops had rendered it unusable.

Already in 2008 and 2010 strangers smashed the protective glass of the Madonna and stole jewelry from the saint's figure. As a result, jewelry donated to the Rüngsdorf Madonna was no longer hung in the glass cabinet. In January 2012, however, another attempt was made to gain access to the Madonna figure. The safety glass was smashed with a hammer, the Madonna was slightly damaged and the Madonna's rosary was torn. The small plastic figure of an embryo was thrown into the display case through the resulting hole .
