Mary, open her coat, is one of the most famous songs of Mary . It asks the protection and care of the Blessed Mother Mary .

The oldest surviving print of the song can be found in 1640 in a booklet with four Marian songs, published by the respected Innsbruck music publisher Michael Wagner. There the song has 29 stanzas. This unusual number of stanzas is an indication that this version is not the "original" - a form-conscious Baroque poet would have written 24, 30 or 36 stanzas. The inconsistent poetic quality of the stanzas also suggests that it is a mixed version of different models. The fact that the print was elaborately designed and provided with notation increased its chances of being archived, while mass pamphlets from the time of origin, which were closer to the original, are likely to have perished. Further prints in song books can be traced back to the middle of the 18th century, after which the interest in the song died out for the time being.

The revival of the song happened from the middle of the 19th century, as fighting songs were needed during the culture war of the Catholics against the majority Protestantism of the Wilhelmine Empire . Philipp Maximilian Körner (1811-1854), a song collector of the Romantic era, reprinted the four songs of the pamphlet from 1640 in his Marian song wreath in 1841 . The first to try a new version of the text was the Jesuit Guido Maria Dreves in 1885 . Joseph Hermann Mohr published his own text version in 1891, for which he also created a new setting. The competition between the two versions prevented the song from spreading beyond the region for a long time. Dreves' version was only included in the diocesan hymn of Meißen, while Mohr's version was first adopted in Basel and Freiburg and later in Münster in the diocesan hymns and is still widespread in the Rhineland and Westphalia.

Georg Thurmair and Adolf Lohmann achieved the decisive breakthrough for the song in 1934 with the idea that Dreves conveyed to combine a better melody from 1640 with the superior text by Mohr. In this form, the song is printed with a selection of four stanzas (of which the third is a new version) in the main part of the Catholic hymn book Praise God under the number 534 ( GL old 595).

Other melody versions are also used regionally. The church musician P. Theodor Grau OFM (1886–1957) composed a melody in popularly swaying 6/8 time, which is still sung today as the “ Amberg melody”, especially during the pilgrimage to the pilgrimage church Maria Hilf . Another setting was created in 1966 by the Swiss church musician Johann Baptist Hilber (1891–1973).
