Marienkapelle in Rieden

The Catholic Marienkapelle is a chapel in Rieden , a local parish in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is consecrated to Mary , the mother of Jesus of Nazareth .

location

The chapel is located on a hill north of Nettetaler Straße , which crosses the town in a west-east direction near house number 40. East of the building, a path also called Nettetaler Straße leads up the slope.

history

The sacred building was built in 1882 in neo-Romanesque style. Not much is known about the building history as the planning documents are no longer available apart from a change to the roof. The building has been privately owned since 1950 and was renovated by its new owner, a trained stonemason, until 1960. The interior is not open to the public.

The chapel is a listed building .

Building description

The building, not facing the east, has a rectangular floor plan and is built into the gently sloping slope. The base consists partly of greywacke that was hewn and built up in layers to form bricks. Above that, there are simple walls made of Riedener tuff , which come from the Hohen Lay region. The corners of the building are structured with pilaster strips . Access is from the south via an arched portal, which is decorated with profiled walls . In the gable stands Joseph of Nazareth on a console . The figure was made in 1989 by two stonemasons from Rieden from Savonnières limestone . On the west and east sides there is also an arched window with a sloping window sill, which creates the transition to the eaves through a surrounding arched frieze that is open at the bottom . On the northern side there is a small rectangular opening in the gable , which is closed with a wooden flap. The gable roof is covered with simple wooden shingles. On the south side, a small bell tower with a bell and a cross extends above the roof.

Furnishing

The block altar , oriented in a north-westerly direction, is walled with slabs of tuff stone. A quatrefoil and a Greek cross are carved out on its front . The interior has a four-part ribbed vault , the keystones of which have a fluted, colored profile that rests on a console .

To the right of the entrance is the town's fourth station of the cross . It shows Jesus carrying the cross. Below is the inscription: "EVERYONE HAS BUILT IT THE HEIRS OF / JOH.-WILHELM & SHF MARIA CATHARINA DOLL / ZU LANGENBAHN / PRAY FOR YOU / ANNO 1825". There is a crossroad to the left of the entrance. The niche cross made of basalt lava has the inscription "ANO 1657 / BERE / NDT / RAU / SCH".

The legend of the Lady Chapel

Tradition has it that three men played a game of skat on Corpus Christi instead of attending church services . A fourth person came up and wanted to play. At first the stranger had bad luck, but gradually he won every game. When a player dropped a card on the floor, he bent down and saw a clubfoot . Now he recognized the devil in the stranger . He left the group under some pretext to see the pastor. This rushed over, but another player was already dead on the ground. He had previously bet with the devil for his soul and lost. The two remaining players, who had learned to be a stonemason, renounced the game of cards and built a chapel in memory of the dead third man.
