The Gothic Marienkirche is a Protestant parish church in Beeskow ( Oder-Spree district ) in Brandenburg .

history

Beeskow was mentioned for the first time in 1272 in a document from Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious of Meissen, in which he donated the Beeskow Hospital to the Teutonic Order . In the following year the order also received patronage over the parish church of St. Mary. In 1323 the patronage passed to the Neuzelle monastery . In a document from Bishop Nikolaus von Meißen from 1380, the hospital was given priority over the parish church.

Today's St. Mary's Church was built in the 15th century instead of an archaeologically proven smaller previous building from the 14th century. It is a three-aisled hall church , which is joined to the south by a lower aisle. The choir is a hallway with a 7/14 end. The tower with its octagonal, crenellated tower has the width of the central nave and is drawn into the nave. The tower was topped in 1511. A Gothic winged shrine with painted panels was set into the Renaissance altar, and the pulpit was also a beautiful Renaissance work.

Due to artillery fire by the Red Army, St. Mary's Church caught fire on April 26, 1945, the roof structure was destroyed and parts of the vault collapsed. On Christmas Eve 1947 four pillars and parts of the choir vault collapsed. Further deterioration due to the weather finally led to the collapse of three more pillars on March 21, 1950. In the 1950s, under Pastor Johannes Kandeler, important security work was carried out, during which the south aisle was consecrated as an emergency church in 1953. In the 1970s, further work on wall crowns and roofs followed. The planned reconstruction of the church began in 1991 and has not yet been completed.

In the choir, high-format pointed arch windows let daylight into the nave. The church building includes a sacristy with preserved medieval paintings and a martyrs hall (the former gallery "martyrs choir").

An important piece of equipment is the Schuke organ from 1965. The organ is also the center of a series of concerts that take place twice a year in St. Marien. However, it is in great need of restoration , so that a support association Marienorgel Beeskow e. V. , which collects donations and organizes benefit concerts.
