The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary ( Swedish Mariakyrkan ) in Sigtuna is a three-aisled brick church in Sigtuna in the Uppland ( Uppsala län ) countryside in Sweden .

history

The monks of the Dominican order received land in Sigtuna in 1237 and built (probably around 1240) St. Mary's Church. The convent prospered and became an educational center until it lost its importance in the late Middle Ages . It was dissolved in 1527 during the Reformation . In contrast to other old churches in Sigtuna (St. Per, St. Olof, St. Lars and St. Nikolai), of which only ruins remain, the monastery church was preserved while the monastery buildings were demolished. The church came to the parish.

investment

The church is the oldest large brick building on the Mälaren . The three-aisled hall church has an elevated, four- bay central nave, to which a two-bay, just closed choir adjoins in the east with three lancet windows in the east wall, reminiscent of Cistercian buildings (cf. Skokloster monastery ). The construction plan was changed repeatedly during the construction of the nave. The vaulting may not have occurred until the 15th century. The west portal made of fired shaped stones has a rich stepping; the brickwork appears influenced by northern Italy.

Furnishing

Several wall paintings from the 15th century have been preserved in the church, including a mercy seat , a crucifixion with Dominic, Bernhard von Clairvaux and Francis. The carved figures in the altar shrine are a Lübeck work from the middle of the 14th century, the shrine itself was created around 1480 in Lübeck. The shrine in the north aisle is a local work, as is the triumphal cross. The pulpit dates from 1647.

Burials

Archbishop Jarler von Uppsala is buried in the choir of the church .
