geography

Marienthal is located in the Eisch valley , northeast of Ansembourg ( Tuntange ) at an altitude of around 236 m. It is located in a large bend in the river on a southern slope that runs from Hollenfels . The southern slope is also called Rëbben . Not far away is the Reiterlee , to the northwest of it is the summit of the Buerggruef . To the east of Marienthal lies the Kollefeld von Marienthalerhof (lux. Mariendallerhaff ).

In addition to the buildings of the Marienthal Monastery, there is also a former restaurant in Marienthal on the road from Aansebuerg to Recken. A ditch fed by the water from the Eisch runs to the monastery and feeds a trout pond there .

history

The Marienthal monastery was founded in the 13th century by Dominican women from the Strasbourg monastery and abolished in 1783 under Austrian rule by Joseph II . In 1890 the White Fathers moved into the ruined buildings. After the Second World War it was used as an emergency shelter. In the 1990s, Luxembourg housed some of the contingent refugees from the war in Yugoslavia here. Gradually, the Service National de la Jeunesse (SNJ), the national provider and coordinator of youth work in Luxembourg, took over the former monastery. It was gradually expanded into an education center with a youth hostel. Today, in addition to accommodation, the SNJ provides various activities. The palette ranges from adventure education offers ( climbing garden etc.) to media education facilities (film studios etc.).
