geography

location

The skull rises in the Sauerland and Diemelbergland at the junction of Obermarsberger Wald in the east, Fürstenberger Wald in the north and Madfelder Wald in the west. Its summit is 4.9 km west of Marsberg , 3.8 km north of its Bredelar district and 4.9 km northeast of the Madfeld district of Brilon , which is in the Hochsauerland district, and 5.8 km south-east of Bad Wünnenberger in the Paderborn district District lead wash .

The northern border of the Diemelsee Nature Park runs across the summit region of the Totenkopf . On the north slope and thus on the side facing the lead wash, the highest point in East Westphalia-Lippe and the Paderborn district is 498  m . The Totenkopfstein monument is just under 650 m (as the crow flies) northeast of its mountain peak .

The highest neighboring mountains of the Totenkopf, which actually only represent its foothills, are Klettenberg ( 484  m ; northeastern), Brülingskopf ( 437  m ; southeast), Brautlicht ( 498.7  m ; southwest) and Liebfrauenberg (approx.  490  m ; southwest) .

Natural allocation

The skull belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33) and in the main unit North Sauerland Oberland (334) to the subunit Fürstenberg Forest (334.8). The landscape falls to the south and south-east into the natural area Bredelarer Kammer (with Marsberger Diemeltal) (332.71), which belongs to the subunit Diemelbergland (332.7) in the main unit of the East Sauerland mountain range (332) .

Streams and watershed

The Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Totenkopf . On the one hand, the water of the Große Aa and Kleine Aa , which arise on the south-west and north-facing slopes and whose water is dammed a few kilometers north of the mountain through the Aabach dam to the Aabach reservoir, mainly flows through the Aabach , the Afte , the Alme and the Lippe west-north-westerly direction into the Rhine . On the other hand, the water of the short flowing waters , such as the Langegrundbach , which swells somewhat south-southwest of the Totenkopf , through the Hoppecke and the Diemel and the Momeke and the Dütlingsbach , which arise on the southern and eastern slopes, runs directly through the Diemel in a mainly northeastern direction into the Weser .

Protected areas

Parts of the nature reserve Forst Bredelar / Obermarsberger Wald ( CDDA no. 389736; designated 2006; 4.7984  km² ) are located on the part of the wooded skull that belongs to the Hochsauerlandkreis . To the west, the landscape drops into the NSG Aabachtal (CDDA no. 162035; 1992; 71.99  ha ), which is located on the border to the Paderborn district . The Altehaier Bruch nature reserve is located on the northern slope in the Paderborn district (CDDA no. 162106; 1994; 2.72 ha).
