Mario Miranda (born January 1, 1937 in Filettino ) is an Italian mathematician who deals with analysis, in particular with calculus of variations and minimal areas .

Career

Miranda studied mathematics at the University of Pisa with a degree (Laurea) in 1959. He then worked there until 1969 as an assistant and temporarily (1959/60, 1964–1968) lecturer (Professore incaricato). 1960 to 1964 (and 1979 to 1981) he was also a lecturer at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa . Since 1979 he has been director of the International Mathematical Center of the Istituto Trentino di Cultura.

Among other things, he was visiting professor in Buenos Aires (1971), in Campinas in Brazil (1974), in Mogadishu in Somalia (1988), at the IMPA in Rio de Janeiro (1976) and in Sao Paulo (1978/79).

In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Nouveaux results pour les surfaces minimales ).

He is a member of the Instituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti and a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei (1991). In 1968 he received the Premio Caccioppoli , the Bonavera Prize and the gold medal of the Accademia dei Lincei.
