Marita Metz-Becker is a German associate professor at the Institute for European Ethnology / Cultural Studies at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 2008 she was awarded the Philipps University's Women's Advancement Prize.

Life and work

Metz-Becker first studied education , German , sociology and European ethnology at the universities of Marburg and Gießen . In 1977 she received her diploma in education as a first graduate of her family. In 1986 she received her PhD in Dr. phil. with the dissertation "But I also had nothing in the world". On the living situation of women in a Westerwald village - a socio-cultural investigation based on narrative interviews . Her doctor's mother was Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann . Metz-Becker belongs to the first generation of female scientists to be trained by a professor. Marita Metz-Becker then led numerous exhibition projects, worked on university research projects in Marburg and Jena and devoted herself to research projects in Great Britain and Austria . In 1996 she completed her habilitation in Marburg with her habilitation thesis “The administered body. The medicalization of pregnant women in the birthing houses of the early 19th century ” , in which she traces the“ masculinization ”of obstetrics with its dramatic consequences for women. This topic also fascinated the author Kerstin Cantz , who took Metz-Becker's scientific work as the basis for her novel “The Midwife” . Through her teaching and research activities, numerous publications and exhibitions, Metz-Becker earned a reputation in women and gender studies.

In addition to her professional career, Marita Metz-Becker volunteers in numerous scientific associations, such as the German Society for Folklore and the Center for Gender Studies and Feminist Future Research at Philipps University. She is chairwoman of the Marburger Haus der Romantik e. V. and since 2008 scientific member of the Historical Commission for Hesse . Another of her projects is the research project on birth cultures on the change in the midwifery profession since 1960, supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation .
