Life
Marithé Bachellerie (* 1942 in Lyon ) is the daughter of a professional cyclist. François Girbaud (* 1945 in Mazamet , Tarn ) comes from a family of textile workers in the Arnette Valley.
Career
Before starting her own brand, Girbaud imported jeans from the United States, while Bachellerie sold handmade ponchos . They met in Paris in 1964 and soon worked together. Their first product line consisted of blue jeans, which were processed using a special process so that they looked washed out, but did not fade further with further use. You are considered the inventor of the stonewash process.
The individual models were called " la Goulue ", " compagnon ", " Toulouse-Lautrec " and " pépère ".
The jeans were a huge hit. After Jennifer Beals wore a pair of jeans from her brand in the film Flashdance in 1982, they managed to enter the US market.
In 2005, the brand was shaken by a scandal when representatives of churches around the world spoke out against an advertisement they had placed, modeled on the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci , with the apostles depicted by women in jeans from the fashion brand. In France , advertising was banned by the Supreme Court, and the ban was lifted again in 2006 during the appeal hearing. However, the company decided not to resume this advertising.
In 2010 the company presented jeans that were produced in a water-saving manner.
The Marithé + François Girbaud brand is sold in numerous boutiques in France, Europe and worldwide. The brand's flagship store is located at 38 rue Etienne Marcel in Paris . The company has a showroom in Düsseldorf .
