Marius Alexander Jacques Bauer (born January 25, 1867 in The Hague , † July 18, 1932 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter , draftsman , lithographer and cartoonist .

Life

In his hometown, Marius Bauer studied painting under George Breitner at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1878 to 1885 . As a member of the Pulchri Studio and Arti et Amicitiae artists' associations , his impressionism was influenced by the Hague School . After a trip to Constantinople in 1888 he turned completely to Orientalism . So further trips took him to Spain , Russia , Morocco , Algeria , Egypt , India , Ceylon and the Dutch East Indies . Art historians occasionally attribute subjective coloring to Bauer's etchings, watercolors and oil paintings - created after those trips; sometimes present the artist with a dreamy atmosphere à la Arabian Nights .

In 1902 Marius Bauer married the painter Jo Stumpff . The couple first lived in the Aerdenhouter ( Bloemendaal ) Villa Stamboel and from 1916 in Amsterdam. They traveled together to Egypt and the Dutch East Indies. The marriage remained childless.
