Marjata is a reconnaissance ship of the Norwegian intelligence service . She is the fourth reconnaissance ship named "Marjata" and has been in service since 2016. The ship's home port is Kirkenes on the east coast of Finnmark . The project of the new reconnaissance ship cost 1.5 billion NOK (160 million euros ), making it one of the most expensive military developments in Norway after the turn of the millennium .

ship

The ship is Norway's fourth reconnaissance ship. All ships bear the name "Marjata".

The Marjata IV project was supposed to replace the Marjata III, which was over 25 years old at the time. After a planning phase, implementation began in 2013. The project continued to get more expensive, eventually costing NOK 1.5 billion (160 million euros ), making it one of Norway's most expensive military developments after the turn of the millennium.

The Marjata was christened in December 2014 by the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in her shipyard Vard Langsten in Tomrefjord . The hull of the ship was built in the Vard Group's shipyard in Tulcea , Romania .

The ship belongs to the Defense Research Institute ( Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt ), which reports to the Norwegian Intelligence Service. The official status is that of a research vessel .

As with its predecessors, the engine room of the Marjata is located in the forward area of the ship. This should ensure that as little noise and vibrations as possible reach the area of the sensor technology further aft.

equipment

Nothing is known about the systems on board. Four larger radomes are visible . Among them are antennas and sensor technology for HF and satellite communication and monitoring.

The Marjata was technically equipped with SIGINT systems in April 2016 at the US Naval Weapons Station Yorktown in Hampton Roads Area , Virginia . The equipment was supported by the CIA station at Camp Peary .

assignment

One of the main tasks is to monitor the ships of the Russian Northern Fleet in the Barents Sea and the Atlantic part of the Arctic . The Russian ICBMs installed on the mobile platforms are also monitored. It is part of NATO's surveillance capabilities on the Alliance's eastern border. The Russian Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade (CAWAT) writes that some observers assumed that the Marjata was part of the American early warning system for ICBMs.

The ship can be used worldwide. During its missions, the ship mostly operates in international waters .
