Mark Anthony Hughes (born December 9, 1986 in Kirkby , Merseyside ) is an English football player .

Career

Hughes played in the youth division of Everton FC at the age of seven and went through all of the club's youth teams. In the 2003/04 season he was first used in the reserve team, whose captain he was in the following period. In December 2004 with a professional contract, Hughes gained his first professional experience in February 2006 during a month-long loan with Stockport County in the Football League Two . In the summer of 2006 he extended his contract with Everton for another year and finally made his debut in the second round match of the League Cup against Peterborough United . Another use in the League Cup followed on December 3, 2006 with his Premier League debut against West Ham United, his third and final competitive appearance for Everton. In January 2007 he moved to Northampton Town in Football League One .

There he played as the successor to Luke Chambers , who had switched to Nottingham Forest , in central defense and was already in the captain's armband for a while at Northampton. The leading player with a strong header made up for deficits in terms of speed and stamina with his understanding of the game and organizational skills. In the following two seasons Hughes acted as vice-captain; while after a 9th place in the 2007/08 season on the last matchday of the following season the crash to a relegation place followed. After relegation, he decided against a contract extension and the associated move into the fourth division and moved in the summer of 2009 as the first newcomer to third division club FC Walsall .

At Walsall, although only 22 years old, he was appointed team captain by coach Chris Hutchings . Mostly a regular player in the first half of the season, he lost his place in the team after an injury in January and was not used again after his recovery, although Jamie Vincent, a left-back, had to help out in the central defense. After he had already accepted a new contract offer from Walsall during the break of the season, he surprisingly received a request from the Australian club North Queensland Fury and then agreed with Walsall to terminate his contract. The move to the A-League to Fury, who had to reassemble a large part of the squad after financial problems in the season break, described Hughes as a "unique opportunity".

Hughes was an absolute top performer at North Queensland, started all 30 league games, was the second top scorer behind David Williams with four goals within the team and received the club awards for best player in the main election (“Player of the Year”), player election (“Players' Player ") And fan vote (" People's Choice Award "). Fury was revoked at the end of the season due to financial problems by the Australian Football Association and Hughes decided to return to England despite offers from the A-League and hired the third division promoted FC Bury .

After two years he left Bury and joined the fourth division FC Morecambe for the 2013/14 season .
