Robert Lindsay Burnett

Sir Robert Lindsay Burnett , GBE , KCB , DSO ( July 22, 1887 - July 2, 1959 ) was an Admiral in the Royal Navy .

Career in the British Navy

After studying at Bedford School , Burnett joined the Royal Navy in 1902 . He served in the China Station from 1904 and then in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleet from 1908. In 1911 he became an instructor at the Navy Schools of Physical Education in Harwich , Shotley and Plymouth .

He served in the First World War , during which he came into contact with the enemy in 1914 in the naval battle near Heligoland and in 1915 in the battle on the Dogger Bank. He was then promoted to commanding officer of the destroyers of the Grand Fleet . In 1933 he became the director of exercise and sports. He also served in World War II , during which he commanded the Home Fleet's destroyer flotilla from 1942 . Since 1943 he was in command of the 10th cruiser squadron and fought while on board the Belfast in the North Sea, especially in the naval battle off the North Cape , where he played a role in the sinking of the German battleship Scharnhorst . Since 1944 he was in command of the South Atlantic Station, one of the geographical areas of responsibility of the Royal Navy.

In 1947 he became commander in chief of Plymouth and retired in 1950.

family

In 1915 he married Ethel Constance Shaw; the marriage remained childless. His older brother was Air Chief Marshal Sir Charles Burnett .
