Market Church (Neuwied)
The Marktkirche in Neuwied was built between 1881 and 1884 according to a design by the architect August Hartel and is a listed building . The Protestant parish belongs to the Wied church district of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .
history
After the city of Neuwied was founded by the Protestant sovereign, Count Friedrich III. von Wied , in 1653, the first church of the Reformed community was built on the market square between 1684 and 1687 . The second church was built by the Lutheran congregation on Friedrichstrasse in 1789 and burned down in 1876.
This misfortune caused the Reformed and Lutheran congregations to join forces in 1877 to form an evangelical unified congregation. The church on the market square was too small for the new community and also dilapidated . So this church was torn down in 1880 and in 1881 a new building of a neo-Gothic hall church started at the same place , the cemetery belonging to the church was built over.
The annual flooding of the Rhine also hit the new market church considerably. It was not until 1931, with the construction of the flood protection dike under Mayor Robert Krups , that the repeated water damage stopped .
In 1944, during the Second World War , the church lost its tall, slim spire due to a bomb strike . This was replaced by a flatter roof after the end of the war. The bodies of the bomb victims were laid out in their devastated nave .
In 1958 a renovation took place. For this purpose, almost the entire interior decoration of the church was removed. The canopies over the choir stalls and the wooden sound cover over the pulpit were lost.
During the last renovation in 1990, the interior of the church was brought back to its original state.
Construction and equipment
The church is a large vaulted gallery made of quarry stone in early Gothic forms with a transept in a square west tower enriched by corner turrets. The western axis with the gallery is emphasized by the gable .
Remains of the old frescoes can still be seen in the transept .
organ
The organ was built in 1967 by the Kleuker workshop in Bielefeld . It has almost 2,700 pipes and 38 registers . The instrument has slide chests . The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
