Markus Fürstenberger

Markus Fürstenberger (also Marcus ; * February 17, 1929 ; † September 28, 2014 ) was a Swiss historian .

Life

In 1960 he received his doctorate in history from the University of Basel with a dissertation on the "Mediation activities of the Basel mayor Johann Balthasar Burckhardt 1642–1722". He worked as an assistant to the history professor Edgar Bonjour , where he played a key role in the work on neutrality policy and the role of Switzerland in World War II , and as a real-life teacher at the Thierstein school in Basel. He published numerous books, some of which were popular science, and essays on the history and customs of Basel and was also involved in the compilation of a reader for the Basel secondary schools.

He was politically active in his hometown of Basel as a representative of the CVP from 1971 to 1975 and from 1975 to 1993 in the Enger Bürgerrat, which he presided over in 1980/81. He was also a member of the Coop Basel ACV Cooperative Council from 1974 to 1994 .

He was awarded a main prize at the 1992 Nitoba Culture Awards.
