Markus Figl (born November 14, 1973 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). Figl has been district chairman of the first district of Vienna, the Inner City , since December 22, 2015 . Figl is also President of the Austrian-Israeli Society.

Life

Markus Figl is the great-nephew of Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl , who was in office from 1945 to 1953 and was very popular because of his popularity. As Foreign Minister, Leopold Figl was one of the signatories of the State Treaty in 1955 , with which the country achieved the withdrawal of the occupying powers and gained its freedom. Markus Figl's grandfather was Leopold Figl's older brother.

After graduating from high school and completing basic military service , Figl studied law and political science at the University of Vienna and the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and worked in a law firm.

In 1999 Figl became Michael Spindelegger's parliamentary assistant and also followed him to the staff of the second President of the National Council. When Michael Spindelegger (ÖVP) moved from the Second President of the National Council to the Office of Foreign Minister in 2008 , Figl moved with him. In 2013, when Spindelegger was appointed Minister of Finance , Figl also followed him in this department.

In his party, the ÖVP, Markus Figl served as chairman of the Young People's Party in the inner city from 1999 to 2006 . In 2005 he became deputy district director under the new district chairwoman Ursula Stenzel .

In March 2011, Figl was elected by the delegates as head of the Inner City of the ÖVP. In the district council election in Vienna in 2015 , in which Stenzel was no longer nominated by the ÖVP and ran for the FPÖ , Figl was the ÖVP's top candidate. With around 26 percent of the vote, Figl was just able to assert itself against the top candidate of the SPÖ , which was able to unite 24 percent of the votes.

After the election, the media speculated about the date of the handover, which was allegedly deliberately postponed by the outgoing district head. In any case, the transfer of office from Stenzel to Figl took place exactly ten years to the day after Stenzel was elected district head in 2005.

Markus Figl is married and has four children. Since 1993 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KaV Norica Vienna in the ÖCV .
