Markus Heikkinen (born October 13 , 1978 in Katrineholm , Sweden ) is a Finnish football player who plays as a defensive midfielder or central defender .
Career
Markus Heikkinen began his adult career in 1996 at Oulu PS , from where he moved to Turku PS in 1997 . From 1998 to 1999 he played in the Finnish Veikkausliiga with Myllykosken Pallo -47 before moving to HJK Helsinki for three years . From there, Heikkinen made the leap into the English Premier League at Portsmouth FC on a loan deal , where he was only able to stay for a year. He had previously been on loan from FC Viikingit . From 2003 he played in the Scottish League for two seasons with FC Aberdeen . From 2005 to 2007 he was with Luton Town in the English Football League Championship under contract. In 2007 he was transferred to the Austrian record champions SK Rapid Wien . In his first season in Austria, he promptly won the Austrian championship title.
Heikkinen always had a nickname among his teammates. In England he was called Heineken at Luton Town (after the beer of the same name), in Vienna at SK Rapid he was nicknamed Mika (by racing driver Mika Häkkinen ). Heikkinen played 61 games for the Finnish national team from 2002 to 2011 . On September 26, 2011, he announced his resignation from the national team of his home country.
