Markus Landau
Markus Landau (born November 21, 1837 in Brody ; † January 10, 1918 in Vienna ) was an Austrian literary historian . He was mainly concerned with the older Italian literature and those of the 18th and 19th centuries, and was particularly prominent with his Boccaccio research.
Life
As a young businessman, Landau undertook several trips through Germany, Italy and France before settling in Vienna in 1869. He completed his studies there with a doctorate.
From 1878 he turned entirely to literary history studies. His work The Sources of the Decamerone is still considered to be one of the most important for comparative literature and material history. Later he also dealt with historical and folklore topics.
He was a corresponding member of the academies in Messina and Cosenza as well as of the historical commission of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde in Vienna .
