Markus Winkler (Philologist)

Markus Winkler (born May 31, 1955 in Bonn ) is a German Romance philologist and comparativeist in Geneva.

Life

From 1973 he studied Romance languages (French and Italian), German , philosophy and education at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . From 1975 to 1982 he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . In 1977/78 he was a scholarship holder at the École normal supérieure (Paris) . He finished his studies in Bonn, where he passed the first state examination for teaching at the grammar school in 1980 in French and German. In 1980/81 he received a scholarship from the University of Lausanne . After completing his legal clerkship at a grammar school in Bonn, he passed the assessor examination in French and German in 1983. With a doctoral thesis on Benjamin Constant , he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD (Egregia cum laude and Summa cum laude ).

He then worked for six years as senior assistant for modern German literature at the University of Geneva . Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, he was visiting professor at the University of Washington from 1990–1992 . The Pennsylvania State University appointed him 1992 as Associate, 1998 as Full Professor of German. He completed his habilitation in 1996 at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . He held visiting professorships in Seattle, Berlin (formerly Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences ), Innsbruck, Limoges and Mainz. Since 1998 he has been full professor of modern German and comparative literature at the University of Geneva. There he has also been the coordinator and one of the three directors of the Program de littérature comparée since 2001 . 2000–2003, 2009–2012 and 2013–2015, he was also director of the Geneva département de langue et littérature allemandes . From 2002 to 2014 he was President of the Swiss Society for General and Comparative Literature.
