Marland Pratt Billings

Marland Pratt Billings (born March 11, 1902 in Boston , † October 9, 1996 in Peterborough , New Hampshire ) was an American structural geologist . He was considered one of the leading authorities on the geology of North America.

Scientific career

Billings graduated from Roxbury Latin School in Boston. He completed his BA in 1923, his MA in 1925 and his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1927.

For much of his academic career, he was Professor of Geology at Harvard University . He joined the faculty at in 1931 and settled in 1972 as emeritus . From 1946 to 1951 he headed his faculty and was a curator at the Geological Museum. He taught at Bryn Mawr College for a short time after completing his PhD . During the Second World War he evaluated strategic nickel deposits in New Caledonia.

He is best known for his exploration of the complex geology of the Appalachians . With others he distinguished three ore formation phases in the Paleozoic (Taconian, Acadian, Alleghenian).

During the 1950s, Billings studied the geology of the Boston area, particularly in the construction of drainage and sewer tunnels created by the Boston Metropolitan District Commission . His geological research also took him to Iceland , Japan and Australia .

Marland had been married to Katharine Fowler-Billings , a successful naturalist and geologist , since 1938 . With her he had a son.
