The Morocco sea bream ( Dentex maroccanus , syn .: D. parvulus Capello , 1867 , Charta maroccanus Pellegrin , 1913 ) is a sea fish from the family of sea ​​bream (Sparidae). The fish live in the eastern Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay (occasionally further north) to the Gulf of Guinea (possibly also further south) including the south-western Mediterranean . The Morocco sea bream reaches a maximum length of 45 centimeters, an average length of 25 centimeters and becomes sexually mature with a length of about 10 centimeters. Her body is high back, flattened on the sides, pink in color with a silvery sheen and without longitudinal or horizontal stripes. There is a small black spot at the top of the pectoral fin base . The continuous dorsal fin is supported by 12 hard rays and 10 to 11 soft rays. The short anal fin has three spine rays and 8 to 9 soft rays. The snout is shorter than the diameter of the eye. The jaws are covered with several rows of conical teeth, the outermost of which have the most powerful teeth with 4 to 6 well-developed front canines in the upper and lower jaw. When the mouth is closed, the upper fangs are visible. The first gill arch has 7 to 9 gill rakes in the upper section and 9 to 12 in the lower. The number of scales along the sideline is 46 to 51.

Way of life

The Morocco sea bream lives at depths of 20 to 500 meters (in the Mediterranean only to a depth of 250 meters) over various seabeds, but prefers scree or gravel soils. It mainly eats crustaceans and molluscs . Like many sea bream, it is a protogyn hermaphrodite ; That is, the female genital organs mature first and then the male ones.
