Marques Keith Brownlee (born December 3, 1993 in Maplewood , New Jersey ), also known under his pseudonym MKBHD , is an American YouTuber . His videos specialize in the field of modern technology, especially smartphones , computer technology and other consumer electronics . With (as of August 2020) over 11.9 million subscribers, he is one of the best-known representatives in the technology sector.

Private life

Brownlee grew up in Maplewood in the US state of New Jersey, where he attended Columbia High School. He then completed a degree in business informatics , which he completed in May 2015. He then devoted himself full-time to the production of his videos and their presentation on YouTube. For years he used his own apartment as a production studio until he rented commercial space in the neighboring town of Kearny in spring 2016 , which has served as the main location ever since. Brownlee is also a professional ultimate frisbee player for Philadelphia Phoenix (2017).

YouTube career

His canal was laid back in March 2008. From 2009 he produced his first technology videos in which he reviewed products that he already owned. Most of these were still images with an overlaid soundtrack that he had recorded with a microphone. A large number of his first works were primarily instructions for hardware and freeware . In the meantime, he owes his high level of awareness primarily to his extensive reviews and tests of new smartphones from various brands. His test portfolio also includes notebooks , headphones , smart home equipment, monitors and televisions . Since buying a fully electric Tesla car , he has also reported occasionally on developments in the electric car industry .

Brownlee's videos are known for an in-depth understanding of the products he uses and for responding to the wishes of his viewers with whom he is in contact via various social media . In so-called “question-and-answer videos”, he asks himself direct questions from his audience at regular intervals. For his show he also interviewed well-known personalities such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk , Microsoft founder Bill Gates , actor Will Smith and basketball player Kobe Bryant .

Since the end of 2014, a smartphone award has been presented once a year , in which what it considers to be the best products of the past year are presented in various categories.
