Marques de Souza , officially Portuguese Município de Marques de Souza , is a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 4009 inhabitants, who live in a community area of around 125.4 km² and are called Marquesouzese. It ranks 307th out of 497 municipalities in the state. The arithmetical population density is 32.5 people per km², the population development is on a downward trend.
It is located about 130 km northwest of the capital Porto Alegre .
history
The exact date of the first settlement by immigrants is not known, around 1880 people of German descent had settled along the Rio Forqueta, followed by Italians around 1885 who preferred the higher elevations. The place was initially named Neu Berlin da Forqueta . The first church was consecrated on February 24, 1889. The community was elevated to the 5th district of Lajeado on July 4, 1916 ( Distrito de Nova Berlim ), in the same year the place was renamed Marques de Souza in honor of the war hero and patriot Count Manuel Marques de Sousa , Conde de Porto Alegre ( 1804-1875).
The community was laid out agriculturally, partly small-scale farmers. Poultry and pig breeding as well as fodder grain cultivation developed. The first school association was founded in 1922, and today 100% of school-age children can go to school. In the 1940s there was semi-precious stone processing. On December 28, 1995, the company was spun off from Lajeado and granted the status of a municipality. The first elections necessary for emancipation were held on October 3rd, 1996, and on January 1st, 1997 the city prefect and city council could begin administrative work. The municipality is divided into the districts of Distrito de Bela Vista do Fão with the settlements Vasco Bandeira and Picada Serra , and the Distrito de Tamanduá , which is inhabited by Italians. Around 97% of descendants of European origin live in Marques de Souza. Around 54% were Protestant in 2010, of these around 77% were Lutheran (German). Around 44% were Roman Catholics (predominantly Italian).

Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , Edmilson Amauri Dörr (Dorr) of the Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) was elected city prefect for the term from 2017 to 2020.
The legislature rests with a nine-member elected city council, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.
