Martha Albrand , bourgeois Katrin J. Lamon (born as Heidi Huberta Freybe September 8, 1910 in Rostock ; died June 24, 1981 in New York ) was a German-American writer who wrote under the name Katrin Holland before emigrating .

Origin and name

Heidi Huberta Freybe was born as the daughter of the merchant's daughter Paula Vick and the major Paul Freybe; Due to her profession she had changing real names. She published her first novel at the age of 16 (1926) under the pseudonym Katrin Holland because she was concerned that her parents would not approve of her novel. She subsequently published under various literary pseudonyms: She also carried the names Christine Lambert, Katrin Loewengard and Loewengard-Griffith. This mess can also be found on the international market.

Her first husband was the lawyer Joseph Maria Loewengard, her second husband in the USA was the industrial diamond dealer Sydney J. Lamon. One of her great-grandfathers was called Albrand, a name she has taken since emigrating to the USA (1937) for her novels, which are now written in English. Her novels were published in German under the pseudonym Katrin Holland, the Swiss publisher Orell Füssli later also published the translations from English under this name.

Under the name Kathrin Holland, she wrote the role for Geraldine Katt in the 1937 film Florentine / We drive against the wind in which Paul Hörbiger and Hans Holt also played.

Her younger sisters, who also became famous, were the writer Sibylle Freybe, who published novels and film scripts under the name Johanna Sibelius , and the actress Jutta Freybe , the journalist Nils von der Heyde was a nephew.

Life

At the age of 16, Freybe went to Berlin , worked in a chemical factory and wrote the novel Man speaks about Jacqueline under the pseudonym Katrin Holland , which was published by Ullstein in 1926 in the newspaper Die Dame . Freybe then received an assignment from the newspaper to travel to Spain as a reporter and wrote other successful novels for Ullstein. By the time power was handed over to the National Socialists in 1933, she had already moved to Lake Orta in Italy . In 1938 the Swiss publisher Orell Füssli published her last novel, Einsamer Himmel , written in German . Freybe only had conditional writing permission in Italy and emigrated to the USA in 1937, she glossed over her political problems and did not call herself an emigrant . She had been a US national since 1938 and lived in Holland Farm, Pattenburg, NJ

The first novel, No Surrender , written under the new pseudonym Martha Albrand, takes place in Dutch, which she calls Dutch, resistance to the German occupation and was accepted by The Saturday Evening Post in 1942 , with a photo of her on the front page. This was followed by Without orders and Endure no longer . Albrand then switched the literary genre from the spy novels and from then on wrote mystery novels for a new mass market in specially created paperback series, for example at Ace Books.

PEN / Martha Albrand Award

At the end of her life, she donated the “Martha Albrand Award” to the US PEN. She has set herself apart from the professional colleagues of the Mystery Writers of America and has also not awarded a prize for crime literature, but a prize each for non-fiction ( PEN / Martha Albrand Award ) and for an autobiography ( PEN / Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir ). She herself did not write an autobiography and did not look for a biographer .
