Martha Eleonor "Martie" Maguire (born Erwin, born October 12, 1969 in York , Pennsylvania ) is an American musician. She is a founding member of the country band Dixie Chicks and has co-wrote several of the group's songs, some of which became top hits in the charts .

She interpreted some songs as the main singer, but mostly she sings backing vocals with her sister Emily Robison . She essentially takes care of the orchestration and the arrangements of the band. She plays the violin , viola , mandolin , double bass and guitar , among other things .

She is the middle daughter of Barbara Trask and Paul Erwin and has two sisters. She grew up in Addison , a suburb of Dallas . Encouraged by her parents, both teachers in private schools, she began playing the classical violin at the age of five. At twelve, she learned the fiddle style on a violin that was given for a birthday .

Early career

Maguire began her musical career in the school orchestra. She learned to play several instruments at an early age and perfected her playing technique together with her sister Emily by playing with two other classmates in a high school bluegrass quartet for over five years . In addition to the violin, she plays numerous other string instruments.

The sisters were very interested in street music, went to many bluegrass festivals and made music with siblings Troy and Sharon Gilchrist. From 1984 to 1989 the four students played as the bluegrass band Blue Night Express while attending the private Greenhill School in Addison, Texas . 1987 won Maguire second place in the annual national competition for violin in Winfield ( Kansas ). After graduating from high school, she studied at Southern Methodist University in Dallas (Texas) from 1988 to 1989 . In 1989 she came third in the national violin competition at the Walnut Valley Festival, also in Winfield.

After graduating from high school, she co-founded Dixie Chicks with sister Emily, Laura Lynch, and Robin Lynn Macy in 1989 . They played bluegrass, country busking and festivals together on the Dallas music scene for six years . After Macy's departure and as a replacement for Lynch, singer and songwriter Natalie Maines joined the band in 1995, expanding their repertoire. With more than 30 million albums sold, the trio is the most successful women's band in the USA.

Personal life and other activities

Martie Maguire has been married to teacher and actor Gareth Maguire from Northern Ireland since 2001 and they have three daughters. In 2010 she released the album Court Yard Hounds with her sister Emily Robison
