Martin Štěpánek (born April 2, 1971 in Ústí nad Labem , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who was active in the course of his career for HC Kladno , HC Litvínov , HC Ambrì-Piotta and three different Finnish clubs. The greatest successes of his career include winning the gold medal at the 2000 World Cup and the Finnish championship title with Kärpät Oulu in 2004. Since the end of his career, Štěpánek has been working as a coach, initially in the junior division and since 2018 as assistant coach at HC Slovan Ústí nad Labem .

Career

Martin Štěpánek began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown at HC Slovan Ústí nad Labem , for whose professional team he made his debut in the second-rate first division in the 1993/94 season . In the following five years the defender played for HC Kladno and HC Litvínov in the Czech extra league . He then moved to other European countries for the first time, where he was under contract from 1999 to 2001 for one season each with Lukko Rauma and HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish SM-liiga . After two years with HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A , the left-handed shooter returned to Finland, where he won the national championship with Kärpät Oulu in the 2003/04 season .

The 2004/05 season began Štěpánek at Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the Russian Super League , before he finished it at his home club HC Slovan Ústí nad Labem in the second Czech division. The following season he began at HC Lasselsberger Plzeň in the Extraliga, before he signed a contract with the Malmö Redhawks from the HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division, shortly before the end of the season . After two years at HC Kladno in the Extraliga, the 2000 world champion played in the 2008/09 season for the Czech second division club HC Havířov Panthers and SG Pontebba in the Italian A1 series . For the 2009/10 season he was signed by Pontebba's league rivals HC Alleghe .

For the 2010/11 season , Štěpánek moved to HC Litoměřice from the 1st division.

International

For the Czech Republic , Štěpánek took part in the 2000 World Cup, where he became world champion with his team.
