Martin Achtsynit , also Martin Amelius von Niefernburg (born October 30, 1526 in Freiburg ; † 1592 ), was from 1554 to 1584 Chancellor of the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach and the first Church Council President of the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach.

Life

Achtsynit studied law in Freiburg from 1549 to 1553. He was taken into service by Margrave Ernst von Baden-Durlach at a young age. On a diplomatic mission in Vienna he obtained his doctorate in 1553 and was raised to the nobility by King Ferdinand . In 1554, under Margrave Karl II , he was appointed successor to the previous Chancellor of the Margraviate Oswald Gut . He held this office under Margrave Karl II and under the guardianship government of Anna von Pfalz-Veldenz for her sons until 1584.

Achtsynit also became the first director of the Baden church council, after he had headed the committee set up by the margrave to draw up church regulations. Here he had to balance the differences between the Württemberg and Saxon members. He then took care of the practical implementation of the Reformation in the country. In 1583, under the tutelage of government, he initiated the foundation of a gymnasium illustrious in Durlach. The middle school was expanded into a grammar school with the aim of shortening university education through better preparation and thus keeping funds in one's own country. In addition, the grammar school was intended to replace university attendance for prospective pastors. Control over the training of pastors was a political issue of the first order in the times of the Augsburg religious peace.

In addition, he tried to stimulate construction activity. It is assumed that Margrave Karl II also discussed the construction plan of Karlsburg with Amelius and that his advice was incorporated. He himself built the Niefernburg Castle in Niefern an der Enz in 1555/56 , after which he was named Amelius von Niefernburg.

Origin, marriage and offspring

Achtsynit was born as the son of Georg Amelius (Achtsynit) from Moravia († October 1541), professor of canon law in Freiburg (Breisgau), and Magdalena Nitl (in) from Treppbach. He married Elisabeth von Jestetten († November 4, 1579) in 1549 and had one daughter:

  • Maria Magdalena († 1581) ⚭ 1572 Johann Wolff , Baden councilor and bailiff in Mundelsheim

In his second marriage he married a Gößlin, whereby it is assumed here that it could be a daughter of the Pforzheim mayor, Peter Gößlin.

The tomb of Achtsynit in the castle church Pforzheim shows Achtsynit with the two women.
