After promotion, however, he moved to third-class FC Lustenau 07 . After half a year with the Lustenauers, he joined the league competitor SCR Altach in January 1997 . Also with the Altachers he was promoted to the second division, but again he left the club before a second division game and moved to FC Hard in the summer of 1997 .
For the 1998/99 season he moved to the fourth-class FC Rot-Weiß Rankweil . In 2000 he went to FC Viktoria 62 Bregenz , with whom he was promoted to the regional league in 2001. After relegation after a season, he left the club. Then he let his career end with the lower-class FC Götzis .
As a trainer
After the end of his career, Bernhard initially worked as a youth coach at First Vienna FC . From 2008 he acted as a youth coach at FK Austria Wien and also worked as an assistant to Herbert Gager and Heimo Kump at the Academy of Austria.
For the 2013/14 season, Bernhard became Damir Canadi's assistant coach at the second division club SCR Altach . Bernhard had already looked after Canadi's son Marcel at Austria. In November 2016 he moved to SK Rapid Vienna together with Canadi . After Canadi was on leave in April 2017, Bernhard was initially head coach together with Goran Djuricin until the end of the season . For the 2017/18 season, Djuricin was finally the sole head coach, while Bernhard acted as co. On October 22, 2018, the contract with Martin Bernhard was terminated by mutual agreement. In mid-June 2019, he became assistant trainer at SCR Altach, as the previous assistant coach Wolfgang Luisser is taking a one-year educational leave.
