Chuck Gentry

Charles T. "Chuck" Gentry (born December 14, 1911 in Belgrade , Nance County , Nebraska , † January 1, 1988 in California ) was an American jazz musician ( baritone saxophone , also clarinet , bassoon ) who was in the big bands of the late swing era and later played in Hollywood studio orchestras.

Gentry has played in the swing orchestras of Harry James (1940), Benny Goodman (1941 and again 1946/47), Jimmy Dorsey (1942), Glenn Miller (1943/44), Artie Shaw (1945), Jerry Gray ( 1946), in the 1950s a. a. with Billy May , Clyde McCoy , Bob Crosby , Bob Keene , Pete Rugolo , Charlie Barnet , Bobby Troup , Dennis Farnon , Georgie Auld , Russell Garcia , Shorty Rogers , Woody Herman and the Los Angeles Neophonic Orchestra. In addition, he worked at record sessions a. a. by Ralph Burns , Jan Savitt , June Christy , Mel Tormé , Spud Murphy , Ella Fitzgerald , Patti Page , The Four Freshmen , Sammy Davis Jr. and Anita O'Day . He also worked with Pete Fountain , Della Reese , Johnny Williams , Erroll Garner , Stan Kenton and Nancy Wilson in the 1960s . In the field of jazz he was involved in around 600 recording sessions from 1940 to 1981, most recently with David Allyn .
