Martin Braungart

Martin Braungart (born August 30, 1941 in Ludwigsburg ; † November 19, 2007 ) was a German motor sportsman, motorsport technician and manager.

Career

Martin Braungart graduated from the TH Stuttgart in 1968 as a Dipl.-Ing. Completed mechanical engineering (specializing in automotive technology) and started working as a test engineer in driving tests at Mercedes-Benz after completing his studies.

In 1968 he moved to the Ford Motorsport Department in Cologne, where he was the technical director and responsible for the development, production and sporting use of rally and racing vehicles. Together with the Ford racing manager Jochen Neerpasch, he shaped the successes of the Ford Escort and Capri era until 1972 .

At the beginning of 1972, Martin Braungart and Jochen Neerpasch switched to what was then the toughest motorsport competitor BMW at the time . Braungart was the technical director of BMW Motorsport GmbH here until 1979, and was responsible for the development, production and use of racing vehicles. Under his direction, the naturally aspirated and turbo variant of the BMW 3.0 CSL were designed and used in the European Touring Car Championship and in the 1975 American IMSA GT Championship .

From 1977, the road version of the BMW M1 was developed at BMW Motorsport GmbH under the project responsibility of Martin Braungart . The street variant was intended as a homologation basis for racing from the start. Martin Braungart, as the project manager, managed the cooperation between the development and testing departments involved at BMW AG (engine and electrics), BMW Motorsport GmbH, Italdesign and the suppliers.

1979 Martin Braungart joins BBS GmbH & Co.KG as the third managing partner .

In 1987 he also took on the position of technical director.

In 1997 the management of BBS Motorsport & Engineering GmbH was added, a position he held until his death in 2007.
