Martin Burkert (born October 14, 1964 in Würzburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and was a member of the Bundestag, where he belonged to the parliamentary left , which forms the left wing of the SPD.

Life and work

Martin Burkert has lived in Nuremberg since he was four. He is married and has two children.

After graduating from secondary school in 1980, Burkert began training in the middle non-technical service at the Deutsche Bundesbahn and had worked there as a civil servant since 1983 . From 1987 to 1988 he did military service . From 1988 Burkert was the main youth and trainee representative on leave at the Deutsche Bundesbahn in Frankfurt / Main and in 1990 switched to the union of railway workers in Germany as a union secretary (from 2000 to 2010: TRANSNET ). Since November 24, 2008 he has been a member of the five-person executive board of TRANSNET. After the merger of Transnet with the transport union GDBA to form the railway and transport union (EVG) on December 1, 2010, he also became a member of the six-person executive board there. He is a member of the Advisory Board of TeamBank AG in Germany.

Political party

Burkert has been a member of the SPD since 1985 and a member of the SPD working group for employee issues (AfA) since 1986. From 1997 to 2004 he was chairman of the SPD local association Nürnberg-Ziegelstein. From 1998 to 2007 Martin Burkert was chairman of the railway operating group of the working group for employee issues (AfA) in Bavaria. From 2002 to 2005 Burkert belonged to the city council of Nuremberg and from 2003 to 2009 the board of the SPD sub-district Nuremberg . From 2000 to 2009 Burkert was a member of the federal board of the AfA of the SPD. Since 2009 he has been deputy chairman of the central depreciation operating group committee for railways. Since May 2013 he has been deputy state chairman of the BayernSPD. On May 20, 2017, he was confirmed in this position by the party congress with 66.3 percent.

MP

From 2005 he was a member of the German Bundestag , in the 18th electoral term he was chairman of the Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure . From February 2010 onwards, Martin Burkert was spokesman for the Bavarian regional group and since January 2014 a member of the extended board of the SPD parliamentary group. From January 2006 to October 2013 he was the railway commissioner of the SPD parliamentary group .

Martin Burkert has always entered the Bundestag via the Bavarian State List . His constituency is Nürnberg-Süd , but he never won it. In November 2019, it was announced that he was stepping down and becoming vice chairman of the rail and transport union.

On February 1st, he left the Bundestag, Bela Bach took over as a successor.
