Martin Feiden (* around 1600 in Ediger ; † September 27, 1675 in Trier ) was a German Benedictine and abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier.

Life

Feiden, about whose school education nothing has been handed down, came from a wealthy winemaking family from Ediger on the Moselle. On January 7, 1636 he was admitted to profession in the Benedictine monastery of St. Matthias in Trier . From 1637 to 1642 Feiden was chef de cuisine , from October 1643 provost and in 1645 he was appointed cellar in Trier. A short time later, Archbishop Philipp Christoph von Sötern appointed him confessor in the St. Irminen monastery in Trier. On February 22, 1649 he was elected abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias. In the same year he successfully asserted himself against the wine tax imposed by the Trier city administration in the St. Mattheiser jurisdiction .

During Abbot Feiden's tenure, building activity began in the monastery, but the renovations and new buildings were considered to be structurally inadequate and later had to be overhauled by his successor, Abbot Cyrill Kersch. The coat of arms on the keystone, dated 1664, above the entrance portal of the Quirinus Chapel in St. Matthias Monastery bears the initials MFA for "Martinus Feiden Abbas" .

On September 15, 1652 he assisted together with the abbot of St. Martin's abbey in the ordination of Archbishop Karl Kaspar von der Leyen . 1654 was Feiden Mitkonsekrator Himmeroder at the consecration of the monastery abbot Johann Post.

Meinrad Chapel in Ediger

From 1655 to 1656 Martin Feiden was the first St. Mattheiser abbot to hold the rectorate of the University of Trier . The fact that Feiden had many new bindings with his coat of arms (a hanging golden grape on a blue background) made for the library was viewed as regrettable , but in return he paid the printers with old manuscripts .

Feiden's brother Hans Meinard, who was very close to him and was a cooper by trade , lived with him in the monastery. In 1665/66 he had the Chapel of Our Lady "Maria Einsiedeln and St. Meinrad" built in Ediger . Feiden, who remained abbot until his death on September 27, 1675, found his final resting place under a grave slab in the north transept of St. Matthias Abbey at St. Martin's altar .
