Martin Harold Phillips Bott FRS (* July 12, 1926 - October 20, 2018 ) was Professor of the Faculty of Earth Sciences at the University of Durham . He was a vice-president of the Christians in Science Association . In 1992 he received the Wollaston Medal from the Geological Society of London .

Scientific career

Bott worked at the University of Durham throughout his academic career. In 1954 he started there as a Turner & Newall Research Fellow . In 1956 he got a job as a lecturer in Geophysics , was promoted to Reader in Geophysics in 1963 and was appointed Professor of Geophysics in 1966. He held this position until his retirement in 1988, only interrupted in 1970 by a year abroad at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory . In 1976 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1992 received the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society.

research

Bott first dealt with the interpretation of magnetic and gravimetric anomalies in England, u. a. in Devon and Cornwall and in the Eastern Alps . In the late 1950s he began investigating the mechanism of geological faults and published work on various problems related to the structure of the earth's crust .

In the 1960s he published essays on the use of digital computation methods to solve geophysical problems and further work on the structure of the earth's crust and regional geophysical studies in England and Ireland. In the early 1970s his textbook The interior of the earth was published , in which he summarized the current state of knowledge about the structure of the earth. In addition to theoretical work on the interpretation of magnetic and gravimetric anomalies, further regional works on geophysical investigations appeared in the course of the next few years, such as the Faroe Islands , South Greenland or the Lesser Antilles . Even after his retirement, he remained loyal to his research areas and until recently has published numerous scientific articles.
