Martin Kirchner (medical doctor)

Martin Kirchner (born July 15, 1854 in Spandau , † November 11, 1925 in Berlin ) was a German hygienist, military doctor and head of the Prussian health system.

Martin Kirchner was born in Spandau in 1854 as the son of a Protestant pastor. After attending the Joachimsthal secondary school in Berlin, he first studied history and philosophy in Halle , but soon switched to medicine. He trained as a military doctor at the Berlin Pépinière and was a military doctor from 1878 to 1896. In 1878 he also received his doctorate in medicine, he received his license to practice medicine in 1880. From 1887 to 1889 he worked as a medical officer in the Hygiene Institute of the University of Berlin with Robert Koch . In 1894 he qualified as a professor for hygiene at the TH Hannover.

From 1896 to 1911 he worked in the Prussian Ministry of Culture - from 1898 as a secret medical advisor in the Ministry's medical department. From 1900 to 1911 he was an associate professor at the University of Berlin. From 1911 to 1919, as a secret senior medical officer, he was in charge of the medical department that had been transferred to the Ministry of the Interior. As a ministerial official, Kircher had a decisive influence on the Prussian district doctor law as well as the reorganization of the medical and dental training and examination regulations and the disease legislation. The organization of the medical examination offices and the Prussian disinfector schools are largely on his initiative. Kirchner played a key role in organizing the fight against tuberculosis and cancer, the rescue service, school health and school dental care and advanced medical training. After his retirement as a ministerial director, Kirchner was a member of the city council in Berlin and district council in Schöneberg, as well as a member of the Prussian state parliament.

In 1904 Kirchner was a co-founder of the journal for advanced medical training .
