Martin Lessenthin (born July 15, 1957 in Legden ) is a German expert on human rights issues, lecturer and journalist . He is spokesman for the board of the International Society for Human Rights and a member of the board of trustees of the German Institute for Human Rights as well as an expert on the Bundestag committee for human rights and humanitarian aid . He is also a laudator and juror at the Tübingen Human Rights Prize, the Weimar Human Rights Prize and the Human Rights Media Prize.

Life

Lessenthin attended the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen and studied history, journalism and political science at the Ruhr University Bochum . He completed his studies with a Magister Artium (MA) and was a scholarship holder of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung , speaker and lecturer for various adult education institutions as well as for associations and other institutions. These include the Josef Hermann Dufhues Foundation, the Deutschlandpolitische Bildungswerk, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the Bildungswerk der Nordrhein-Westfälischen Wirtschaft, the Association of Expellees , the Karl Arnold Foundation , the umbrella association of the youth press, the Evangelical Working Group of the CDU and the Episcopal Academy .

He has been volunteering for the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) since the mid-1970s , while he worked as a freelance journalist for the Christian Media Union and the Christian Metal Union, among others .

From 1989 to 1998 Lessenthin was editor-in-chief of the German trade union newspaper in Stuttgart. Between 1990 and 1998 he was a member of the federal executive boards of the Christian Trade Union Confederation (CGB) and the General Association of Christian Trade Unions in Germany (CGD). From 1989 to 2000 Lessenthin was editor-in-chief of the media-critical magazine Our Sendung by Aktion Funk und Fernsehen (AFF).

Since 2000 he has been the head of the press department of the ISHR . In 2001 he was elected as spokesman for the executive board of the ISHR.

On February 26, 2016, the German Bundestag elected Lessenthin to the Board of Trustees of the German Institute for Human Rights (DIMR) as the representative of civil society at the suggestion of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group .

As an ambassador for human rights, Lessenthin is committed to solving special human rights problems together with other human rights defenders.

Lessenthin is a member of an evangelical free church community. He is married, has two children and lives in Hessen .
