Ansgar Graw

Ansgar Graw (born June 20, 1961 in Essen ) is a German journalist and publicist . He has been the editor of the debate magazine The European since March 2020 .

Life and Publications

Graw grew up in Gey near Düren and attended the Stiftisches Gymnasium . After graduating from high school in 1981, he studied history and political science at the University of Hamburg . He worked for the Burda publishing house and in the directorship of Sender Free Berlin (SFB) as a personal assistant to the SFB director Günther von Lojewski .

Since the mid-1980s, Graw has been touring Africa ( Mozambique , Somalia ) as a foreign correspondent . For the International Society for Human Rights he documented the situation of the SWAPO prisoners in Zambia and Angola . In the early 1990s, Graw was involved as a speaker at the Weikersheim Study Center , the Young Generation Working Group in the Association of Displaced Persons and the Young Country Team East Prussia (JLO). Graw's essay, “Decadence and Struggle. About the mistake of non-violence ”on the authors of the 1994 anthology The Self-Confident Nation , after he had already been in the anthology Westbinding. Published the previous year by the publicists Rainer Zitelmann , Karlheinz Weißmann and Michael Großheim . Opportunities and Risks for Germany had published the article "(Historian) dispute among Adenauer's grandchildren".

Graw worked for Die Welt since 1998 . Initially political editor, he became head of the media division in 1999, vice-head of domestic politics in 2001 and parliamentary correspondent in 2003. From 2009 to 2017, Graw reported as Senior Political Correspondent from Washington DC for Die Welt und die Welt am Sonntag . He was chief reporter since 2017.

Between 2002 and 2007 Graw was a frequent guest on the WDR talk show Press Club . From 2009 to 2017 he wrote as Senior Political Correspondent from Washington, DC for the " Welt -group".

In August 2014 he was arrested and briefly detained by police while reporting on the riots in the US city of Ferguson . As a result, he and three fellow journalists filed a lawsuit against County St. Louis and the relevant police department in March 2015. A confidential settlement was finally reached: in May 2016, County St. Louis committed itself to making corrections in the way the police dealt with journalists.

In July 2017, his book "Trump crazy the world" was published.

As chief reporter for "Welt", Graw reported on the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party and interviewed many of its top politicians such as Robert Habeck . In February 2020 his book "The Greens in Power - A Critical Balance" was published. According to the publisher, the book "traces the often disturbing history of the Greens fairly but critically, examines their relationship to Fridays for Future or Extinction Rebellion and analyzes the errors of the transport and energy turnaround". Graw warned in the SWR against a failed "eco-moralism".

In February 2020, it was announced that Graw would become editor of the debate magazine The European and the satirical magazine Pardon . Both publications appear in the publishing house of the former Focus editor-in-chief Wolfram Weimer .
