Martin Mesík (born October 17, 1979 in Banská Bystrica ) is a former Slovak ski jumper .

Career

After many of the Slovak ski jumpers who had already started for the Czechoslovakia team ended their careers in the 1990s, Mesik was for many years the only Slovak who regularly competed in the ski jumping World Cup . He formed a two-man team with his coach Peter Schlank , who also acted as national coach for Slovakia. Above all, it was the almost complete lack of financial support from the Slovak Ski Association, a lack of sponsors and professional outfitters that hindered him. He was unable to train on his home hill in Banská Bystrica for several years after it was bought by a private person who refused entry. For world cup jumping he was often provided with a physiotherapist by the International Skijumping Aid association , which supports smaller ski jumping nations .

Mesík first appeared internationally in a team competition in 1995 in Planica , his first individual result at a World Cup comes from January 1996. In the 13 years in which he took part in the World Cup, however, there were no outstanding results and his balance sheet shows predominantly Placements from 30 to 50 and thus outside of the point ranks. The best result is a 16th place in Willingen 2003 . At the Summer Grand Prix in 2005, Mesik was able to achieve the best performances of his career. He made it into the top twenty several times and was able to celebrate the best result of his career in a first-class jumping with an eleventh place in Hakuba . In the end, this earned him a 23rd place overall.

The Slovakian's greatest sporting success was his participation in the Olympic Games twice . In Nagano in 1998 he was a good 26th on the large hill, eight years later in Turin he failed twice in the qualification. Martin Mesík also took part in several ski flying and Nordic world championships . The best result was rank 20 on the large hill at the 1997 World Championships in Trondheim . In ski flying he was placed in the top 30 three times.

After the 2007/08 season, Mesik ended his career in which he was able to qualify for 90 World Cup competitions. He is now working as a salesperson at a BMW branch in Banská Bystrica.

In 2006 he achieved his personal best distance on the Kulm with 195.5 meters and thus holds the Slovak record in ski flying.
