Life and work

Pörksen studied Protestant theology and economics in Tübingen , Berlin and Kiel . From 1927 to 1929 he was a private tutor at Luisenlund Castle . In 1930 he received his doctorate in political science with the work of Johann Hinrich Wichern and social issues . In the same year he became a pastor in Gelting . In 1934 he switched to the Schleswig-Holstein Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society in Breklum as a mission director . In 1956 he came to Hamburg in the same position. In 1959 he also took over the chairmanship of the mission academy at the University of Hamburg . After his retirement in 1978 he became chairman of the “North Elbian Center for World Mission and Church World Service” .

During the Nazi era, Poerksen was a member of the Pastors' Emergency League and one of the leading figures in the Confessing Church in Schleswig-Holstein . After the end of the war, he negotiated with the later bishop for Holstein, Wilhelm Halfmann , on behalf of the Brother Council of the Confessing Church with the incumbent church leadership, which is still dominated by representatives of the German Christians , about a reorganization of the offices and committees in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schleswig- Holstein . Poerksen was elected Bishop of Schleswig against his express will at the beginning of September 1946 , but resigned from this office on November 2, 1946 because he wanted to continue working for the mission. The founding of the catechetical seminary in 1945, which was renamed the “Breklum seminary for missionary and church service” in 1948, goes back to his initiative.

In 1956 the University of Kiel awarded him an honorary doctorate in theology . Martin Pörksen went on many mission trips and has written a large number of publications on them.

Pörksen had been with his wife Elisabeth ("Mona"), born in 1930. Langlo, married. The couple had 5 daughters and 8 sons, including the linguist and writer Uwe Pörksen .

MP

As a representative of the regional church, Poerksen was a member of the first appointed state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein from February 26 to March 13, 1946 . He resigned the mandate for health reasons.
