Martin Petzold (born June 25, 1955 in Leipzig ) is a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Martin Petzold, son of the theologian Ernst Petzold , had his first contact with music as a child in his parents' house. He received his first musical training in the Leipzig Thomanerchor , to which he belonged from 1965 to 1974, at the same time as Georg Christoph Biller and Matthias Weichert , who were of the same age . His father, brother and later his son Jakob were also members of the St. Thomas Choir. Jakob Petzold (* 1986), who was the victim of a fatal traffic accident in 1998, is commemorated with the annual Petzold legacy awarded to outstanding Thomaners .

Since Petzold refused to work with the weapon, he was not allowed to start studying music after graduating from high school. Instead, he entered the Theological Seminary in order evangelical theology to study, but then had the desire to become a singer. He was denied this study as long as he did not do the basic military service. He was able to begin vocational training in the locksmith's, art blacksmith's and fine iron workshop of Franz Erich Stock, who was a member of the church council of St. Thomas's Church . One day when a music duo at the vocational school that was supposed to perform at a parents' meeting canceled, Petzold stepped in at the director's request. The “singing worker” was then asked to introduce himself at the direction of the vocational school director at the “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” University of Music . He studied with Eva Schubert for a week until the Ministry for State Security expelled him from college for refusing to do military service . Then Martin Petzold did his 18-month military service.

From 1979 to 1985 he was able to study singing with Eva Schubert and Bernd Siegfried Weber. His original goal was a career as a choir singer, for example with the Leipzig Radio Choir . Only after he was engaged as a student for his first opera roles in Halberstadt and Altenburg , did Petzold decide to become an opera singer . After his state examination in 1985, he was given a permanent position at the State Theater in Halle . In addition, since 1986 he has appeared regularly at the Leipzig Opera , of which he has been a permanent member of the ensemble since 1988. In addition, Petzold works with choirs and orchestras such as the Thomanerchor, the Dresden Kreuzchor , the Monteverdi Choir Hamburg , the Gewandhausorchester , the MDR Symphony Orchestra and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra . The repertoire of the opera, oratorio and concert singer includes works by composers of all styles. He is often a guest at European opera houses. A special focus of his work is the interpretation of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach . In addition, Petzold also promotes the preservation of German folk songs .

Martin Petzold is also active in teaching, since 2002 as a lecturer in international master classes and as a voice trainer with the St. Thomas' Choir. He is also increasingly active as an illustrator and caricaturist. In 2001 Martin Petzold was appointed chamber singer .
