Martin Schlensog

Max "Martin" Schlensog (actually: Max Hermann Theodor Schlensog ; born June 6, 1897 in Löwen bei Brieg , Silesia ; † March 9, 1987 in Hamburg ) was a German composer and music teacher.

Life

Schlensog passed his exams as a primary school teacher in Brieg in 1906 and, at the same time , was trained in music by Paul Hielscher, the cantor of the Nikolaikirche in Brieg. In the following years he worked as a teacher at various elementary schools in Silesia, then as a music teacher at the rural school homes in Holzminden, Sinntalhof and Gandersheim. In 1924 he succeeded Fritz Jöde as director of the Hamburg Volksmusikschule. From 1926 he was a teacher at various schools in the Hamburg area. Because of his social democratic attitude, he was exposed to hostility and periods of unemployment during the Nazi regime. From 1945 until his retirement in 1962 he was the rector of a primary school in Hamburg-Nienstedten and at the same time lecturer at the Institute for Teacher Training in Hamburg.

Schlensog has been actively involved in the youth music movement since his seminar time . His compositional work focuses on vocal and choral music , it includes a Requiem (1960), a Te Deum (1961), cantatas and song cantatas , motets , song cycles as well as house and performance music.
