Life

His grandfather Anton van Voorst taught him Latin. His parents were remonstrants and appointed him to study law. He also studied theology and philosophy in Leiden under Walaeus from 1632 . At Voetius he acquired his doctorate in philosophy around 1636.

Around 1638 he became professor of classical literature, eloquence and history in Deventer and professor of logic and physics in Groningen in 1640 .

With his quarreling he caused himself many annoyances. After the death of his first wife, Angelica van Merck, with whom he had seven sons and a daughter, he ran into financial difficulties. He entered into a second marriage to a widow whom, like her, he had considered rich. His situation worsened to such an extent that he was moved around 1664 to leave his professorship and leave Groningen of his own free will.

He then became the official historian of the Brandenburg Elector of Berlin. Soon he got a position as honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) .

Schoock wrote around 50 writings. When there was a controversy between René Descartes and Voetius in 1642/43 , Schoock attacked Renati Des-Cartes Descartes and his philosophy in the work Admiranda methodus novae philosophiae and later claimed that Voetius was the main author. In 1664 he published Tractus de Butyro (About butter ), the first treatise on this milk product and at the same time Accessit ejusdem Diatriba de aversatione casei (On the aversion to cheese ).
