Martin Statius

Martin Statius (* 1589 in Naugard in Western Pomerania ; † March 12, 1655 ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Statius became a deacon at St. John's Church in Gdansk in 1617 , retired in 1653 and died at the age of 66. Statius wrote numerous of his own theological writings, but was best known through collections. In 1626 he submitted a compilation of quotations from Martin Luther ( Lutherus redivivus. That is: Lutheri Christenthumb: Darinn the true living faith / its origin / nature / power and effect / which were Christian majesty / glory / holiness and union with Christ / as well her unsanitary love / and Christian life / with Lutheri gantz wonderful and ingenious words for the eyes ), in which he proves the agreement of Luther with Johann Arndt's mystical view of a union of believers with Christ and the demand for a faith effective in holy life should. It was reprinted into the 19th century (also in Danish translation in 1761) and influenced August Hermann Francke's understanding of Luther. In 1636 he organized a comprehensive collection of the tracts of the Salzwedel pastor Stephan Praetorius under the title Spiritual Treasury of the Faithful , which was reprinted many times up into the 19th century and had great influence, but also repeated attacks by Lutheran Orthodox theologians (e.g. Abraham Calov , Konrad Tiburtius Rango ) attracted.
