Stephan Praetorius German also Schulte (born May 3, 1536 in Salzwedel ; † May 5, 1603 ibid) was a German Protestant theologian and writer of edification .

Life

Praetorius attended the school of Abdias Prätorius in his hometown, then in Magdeburg . In March 1558 he moved to the University of Rostock , where he mainly joined David Chyträus . In order to earn a living, he taught at a school. In October 1563 he received his bachelor's and master's degree. In 1565 he left Rostock . By Johann Agricola Eisleben he was in Berlin ordained preacher in Salzwedel, where he first as a deacon at St. Augustine's Church, from 1569 until his death as a pastor at the St. Catherine's Church worked. He rejected appointments to Uelzen and Wismar .

Praetorius built a Latin school for which he published some textbooks. However, his pastoral treatises and edification pamphlets attracted particular attention. Gottfried Arnold lists 80 of them. Johann Arndt published a thematically organized collection in 1622, Martin Statius published a selection in 1625 and a comprehensive collection under the title “Spiritual Treasury of the Believers” in 1636, which was reprinted many times up to the 19th century, but also repeated attacks by Lutheran Orthodox theologians ( e.g. Abraham Calov , Konrad Tiburtius Rango ) attracted. The Swedish translation was of great importance for pietism in Sweden . A new edition of the Danish translation was published in 2008.

Although Praetorius wanted to maintain Lutheran orthodoxy, he attached great importance to personal sanctification in life. This gave rise to the charge of perfectionism (Praetorianism). His writings, especially in the Statius collection, inspired numerous mystical spiritualists in the 17th century (e.g. Augustin Fuhrmann , Friedrich Breckling ).
