Martin Terens

Martin Terens (born June 5, 1985 in Hamburg ) is a German pianist of modern and creative jazz.

Live and act

Martin Terens started playing the piano at the age of eight. He received classical piano, violin, organ, harpsichord and composition lessons at the Hamburg Youth Music School. He took part several times successfully in various categories in the national competition " Jugend Musiziert ". He also played the double bass, electric bass and drums on an autodidactic basis. At the age of 18 he finally devoted himself to jazz. From 2005 to 2012 he studied jazz and popular music at the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg. He received lessons from Wolf Kerschek , Buggy Braune , Lucas Lindholm , Jürgen Friedrich , Mischa Schumann and Tinatin Gambashidze. From 2012 to 2014, Martin Terens completed a master's degree at City College in New York with the help of a scholarship from the German-American Fulbright Commission . There he received lessons from Kevin Hays , Marc Copland , Steve Wilson and Jochen Rückert and worked as an adjunct lecturer at City College. From 2015 to 2016 he was also a scholarship holder in the "Our Arts" funding program of the Claussen Simon Foundation .

Martin Terens gave concerts with his trio in the USA, Lebanon and Yemen at the invitation of the Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe Institute . He worked with musicians Jeremy Pelt , Sebastian Gille , Joel Frahm , Bill Ramsey , Dusko Goykovitch and Georgie Fame . He is also a permanent member of the Lisa Wulff Quartet. He currently lives in Berlin and teaches in addition to his artistic work in the preparatory departments of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Music School and the Neukölln Music School.

His game is characterized by harmonious richness and subtlety.

Prizes and awards

In 2009, Martin Terens won 1st prize at the International Jazzhaus Piano Competition in Freiburg. In 2010 and 2012 he took part as a soloist in the finals of the piano competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival . Furthermore, during his time in New York in 2014, he received the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award from the US collecting society ASCAP .
