The Claussen Simon Foundation is intended to promote science, research, education as well as art and culture and is based in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . Particular attention should be given to promoting science and its young talent in Germany with a focus on Hamburg. The foundation was established by Georg W. Claussen in 1981 and started work in 1982.

Emergence

The foundation was established by the then chairman of the supervisory board and long-time chairman of the executive board of Beiersdorf AG , Georg W. Claussen , on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the company's founding in 1981. In 1999, a will from his cousin Ebba Simon contributed to the further endowment of the foundation's assets.

The foundation has been a foundation under civil law with legal capacity since October 2011, with its seat in Hamburg. The managing director of the foundation is Regina Back. Before 2011, the foundation was a trust foundation in the administration of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and was represented by it.

Foundation purpose

The purpose is the "promotion of science, research, education as well as art and culture". The purpose of the foundation is achieved in particular by awarding scholarships to talented schoolchildren, students and young scientists.

Funding programs

The foundation runs funding programs in the areas of “Education and School”, “Science and University” and “Art and Culture”. In addition to financial support, the funding concept also includes non-material support for the scholarship holders through workshops, seminars and network meetings that are offered as part of the individual programs or across programs.

Education and school

"Academy for high school students"

As part of the “Academies for Upper School Students”, schoolchildren have the opportunity to get to know a subject for three days. It is a joint initiative of the authority for schools and vocational training in Hamburg, the FOM - University of Economics and Management , the German Society for Personnel Management and the Claussen Simon Foundation. During the "academy" the students get an insight into the organization and control of companies and can talk to project partners about options for their personal future planning. Participation is free of charge.

"Enthusiastic about business and STEM"

In cooperation with the FOM University of Economics and Management , the foundation offers the funding program “Enthusiastic about business and MINT” . Motivated and performance-oriented high school students from the 10th grade have the opportunity to study economics free of charge in parallel to school lessons. The foundation selects applicants, finances the tuition fees and book money and organizes workshops with speakers from business, science and culture.

"Coaching for school administrators"

With the “Coaching for School Leaders” funding program, the State Institute for Teacher Training and School Development and the Claussen Simon Foundation want to offer school leaders the opportunity to have their own work professionally supported.

"Foreign language assistants"

With the “Foreign Language Assistants” program, the foundation and the Hamburg Authority for Schools and Vocational Training would like to promote the exchange of native speakers. So-called “foreign language assistants” are trainee teachers from abroad who come to Germany for up to nine months to assist the foreign language teachers in local schools.

The foundation financially supports the stay of a "foreign language assistant" and provides a monthly "relationship monitoring system" which is supposed to ensure the cooperation between "liaison teachers" (mentors) and "foreign language assistants".

"Horizons"

With the “Horizonte” scholarship program, the Claussen Simon Foundation, the Jürgen Sengpiel Foundation and the Dürr Foundation support prospective teachers with a migrant background who are completing a teaching degree at the University of Hamburg .

Against the background of increasing social heterogeneity, the scholarship program should aim to promote diversity in educational institutions and the competent use of it. The professional and personal development of the scholarship holders should help to support the future teachers on their way to school and to strengthen their individual skills. The program was originally an initiative of the non-profit Hertie Foundation and has been implemented by the Claussen Simon Foundation since the 2016/17 winter semester.

"Children's University Hamburg"

Since 2002, six lectures by scientists from the University of Hamburg for children between 8 and 12 years have been offered every autumn . The lectures are free of charge. In addition, GEOlino , Jungheinrich , Euler Hermes Germany and ETV KiJu support the children's university in Hamburg.

"Our schools"

With the “Our Schools” program, the foundation would like to promote cooperation between pupils and teachers in projects aimed at improving teaching in Hamburg's secondary schools. A program advisory board selects the project proposals that are funded with an annual budget of 100,000 euros at three Hamburg schools.
