Katharina Boele-Woelki

Katharina Renate Susanne Dorothee Boele-Woelki (born June 13, 1956 in Baden-Baden ) is a German legal scholar and has been President of Bucerius Law School since October 2015 .

Life

Boele-Woelki studied law at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and the Free University of Berlin from 1975 to 1979 . In 1982 she received her doctorate from the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on "The effectiveness test of nationalities in Dutch international family law".

In 1982 she went to the Netherlands as a scientist, since 1990 she has taught and researched at the law faculty of the University of Utrecht . In 1995 she was appointed professor for international private law, comparative law and family law. Boele-Woelki has headed the Faculty's private law department three times for two years each time. She was visiting professor at Columbia University and is an adjunct professor at the University of the Western Cape .

In June 2015, the Board of Trustees of the Bucerius Law School appointed Boele-Woelki as President on October 1, 2015, and appointed her to a chair for comparative law.

She is one of the supporters of the Charter of Fundamental Digital Rights of the European Union , which was published at the end of November 2016.

Memberships and honors

Boele-Woelki President of the International Academy of Comparative Law since 2014 ; Until 2014 she was also President of the Dutch Association for Family Law and a member of the board of the Dutch Association for Comparative Law. She is also a member of the German Society for International Law and the Scientific Association for Family Law . In 2007 she founded the Utrecht Center for European Research into Family Law. Since 2001, Boele-Woelki has been chairman of the Commission for European Family Law founded on her initiative .

In 2011 Boele-Woelki was awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University . In 2012 she received the Anneliese Maier Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for her work in the field of international and European family law. In 2013 she was elected a member of the International Advisory Board of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2015 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lausanne . In 2016 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Antwerp and was elected a member of the Academia Europaea , and in 2017 a member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg .

Publications and editorships

Boele-Woelki is co-editor of various Dutch, South African and European journals and one of the editors of the European Family Law Series since 2003. She researches and publishes on international and comparative family law, private international law and comparative law.
